Impactful.

I was reading an article about marketing today, and I saw this horrible word again.

I commonly see other resume gurus using this term in their articles (often claiming a background in marketing or sales of course) and consequently, I am seeing it more and more on resumes that are sent to me for review.

Let me ask you this. What do you think of when you hear “impactful”?

I personally think of a bad tooth that needs a dentist. I also get a bad image in my head about being constipated.

Here are more appropriate words to use (less likely to gross out the reader).

• Influential
• Significant
• Compelling
• Effective
• Powerful

By the way, I am not alone here. I found a few other people that share the same distaste for that word as I do.
